Generative AI Policies
Indonesian Journal of Religious
Declaration of Use of Generative AI
Authors are required to declare the use of generative AI in the manuscript preparation process when submitting their papers.
The Indonesian Journal of Religious recognizes the growing importance and potential of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, hereafter referred to as "AI Tools," in advancing research. When used responsibly, these tools offer researchers an efficient way to organize their work, quickly gather critical insights, and achieve higher-quality outcomes. AI Tools, including AI agents, advanced research tools, and generative technologies, assist researchers by synthesizing complex bodies of literature, providing summaries of research fields or questions, identifying gaps in the literature, generating ideas, and offering personalized support for tasks such as improving content organization, language, and readability.
However, while these AI Tools can be helpful, they should never be seen as replacements for human expertise, critical thinking, or evaluation. It is essential that human oversight and judgment guide their use at all stages. AI technology should complement human intellect, not replace it.
Author Responsibility
Ultimately, authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscripts. This includes the following responsibilities:
-
Review and Verification
Authors must carefully review and verify the accuracy, comprehensiveness, and impartiality of all AI-generated outputs. This involves cross-checking sources, references, and any factual claims, as AI tools can sometimes generate incorrect or fabricated citations and data. Authors must ensure that AI-generated content does not mislead readers and that sources are authentic and reliable. -
Editing and Adaptation
Authors must thoroughly edit and adapt all AI-generated material to ensure that the manuscript accurately represents their authentic contribution, reflecting their own analysis, interpretation, insights, and ideas. The manuscript should remain an expression of the author’s own scholarly work, with AI serving only as a tool to assist in this process. -
Transparency
If AI Tools have been used in the preparation of the manuscript, authors must disclose this usage clearly and transparently in the manuscript. A declaration statement is required at the time of submission. This statement should describe the tools used and their purpose, ensuring that readers understand the role these tools played in the preparation of the work. Failure to disclose the use of AI Tools undermines the integrity of the research process. -
Data Privacy and Intellectual Property
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their use of AI Tools does not violate any data privacy or intellectual property laws. Before using any AI tools, authors should carefully review the terms and conditions of the tools to confirm compliance with privacy laws, intellectual property protections, and any other relevant regulations. -
AI Tools and Authorship
It is important to note that AI Tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors on a manuscript. Authorship implies significant intellectual contribution and responsibility, which can only be attributed to human authors. AI tools do not possess the capacity for original thought, critique, or decision-making that is fundamental to authorship.
Declaration Statement
The use of AI Tools must be disclosed in the manuscript submission by including a clear and concise statement at the end of the manuscript. This statement should appear in a new section, placed just before the references list in the final, published work.
Example of the declaration:
Title of new section: Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted Technologies in the Manuscript Preparation Process
Statement:
During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) utilized [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] to [SPECIFY PURPOSE, e.g., "assist in literature review," "organize content," "improve readability," etc.]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) thoroughly reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the manuscript.
This declaration applies only to the use of AI tools in the writing and research process. It does not apply to basic tools such as grammar checkers, spell checkers, or reference management tools. If no AI tools were used, no declaration is necessary.
Important Notes:
-
Tools and Services Exempt from Declaration: Basic tools used for checking grammar, spelling, or references do not require disclosure. These tools are considered standard and do not significantly influence the academic content or research process.
-
Confidentiality and Review Process: The Indonesian Journal of Religious takes data privacy and research integrity seriously. Therefore, to protect authors' rights and safeguard the confidentiality of their research, this journal currently does not permit the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools, such as ChatGPT, by reviewers or editors during the peer review and manuscript evaluation process.
-
Policy on AI Tools: The journal adheres to a strict policy regarding the responsible use of AI tools and is actively assessing AI tools that comply with ethical standards. The policy may be revised in the future as the technology evolves and new tools emerge that align with the journal's standards for research integrity and transparency.
By requiring this declaration, the Indonesian Journal of Religious aims to maintain the highest standards of scholarly integrity and ensure transparency regarding the use of AI technologies in research. This practice helps safeguard the academic rigor of the publication process while acknowledging the growing role of AI in academic work.
